For the end of Scholastic Journalism Week, Student Leadership teacher Robert Foshee set up a ‘press conference” for Feather adviser Greg Stobbe and Editor-in-Chief Tynin Fries, ’14, Feb. 22.
Stobbe and Fries were called down to the office during the 10-minute break, where a sign, microphone and podium were set up. Students had gathered around the area to ask questions about the staff’s upcoming competitions and trips to San Francisco, in April for the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), and New York in March for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA).
The idea of the conference was to turn the tables on the staff and allow them to feel like the interviewee rather than the interviewer. The staff also celebrated Scholastic Journalism Week by posting their own Harlem Shake video, Feb. 17.
The staff celebrated the week in various ways, including a First Amendment discussion during lunch, Feb. 21. The editors led a discussion about the students’ rights and privileges given to them by the First Amendment. For more information on their discussion, read the Feb. 21 article, Feather celebrates First Amendment.
Stobbe felt that the impromptu press conference was a great way to end the week, especially being his birthday, too.
“The staff has promoted Scholastic Journalism Week via articles, photos, videos, the school announcements, Twitter and Instagram,” Stobbe said. “But it was good for the students during the extended break to hear from Tynin {Fries} about what the editors have planned in March and April. She has dedicated herself to lead the staff to promote student functions, share about issues and help provide leadership to her peers. Oh, and thanks editors for a great birthday celebration as well.”
