CARUTHERS PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT
Eagles lose tight game in closing inning –8-6, Feb. 28
For the second game of the Caruthers Tournament, the Fresno Christian boys baseball team travelled to Tranquillity High School to take on the Tigers. This would be the team’s first game on the road and a tough challenge for the group.
The game started at a very high pace offensively. Both teams came out batting well. FC drove in one run in the first, but left a runner on third at the end of the inning. Tranquillity scored two to take the 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
After that, both teams seemed to settle in defensively. Pitchers on both team found their zones and hit their spots. No other runs were scored until the bottom of the third when the Tigers drove one more in to make it 3-1.
After another scoreless fourth, both teams changed pitchers. Tranquillity seized the opportunity and scored five in the fifth increasing the lead to 8-1 and leaving FC with a huge hole to fill. With the team running out of outs, FC entered the seventh inning down by 7 but hungry for a win. Dawson Oquist led off the inning, getting on base and setting the tone. FC scored five runs, only needing two more to tie, before they reached their final strike. With Sophomore Ben Callahan on third and Matt Howard at the plate, the Tigers felt the pressure. Howard swung and missed and the game was over.
However, on that last pitch, the pitcher seemed to start, stop, then start his pitching motion again (the violation is called a balk and would’ve awarded all runners to advance one base). However, the umpires did not call a penalty and called the game. After much disagreement and appeal by FC coaches, the umpires stuck to the call and FC was handed its second loss, 8-6.
Sophomore Matt Ely says that even though the umpires were calling a frustrating game, it was no excuse for a loss.
“It could’ve gone better.” Ely said, “The way the umpire called his stuff was a little unfair, but that’s no excse. we dug ourselves too a big a hole to win that game. We need to play better as a team and work together. But we are a young team, once we start playing together more and start learning from each other, we will be a good team.”
The Eagles next game will be on Saturday, March 2 as the team travels to Lemoore to play Kings Christian High School.
