KERMAN DEFEATS FC, 218-221

In the first match of the season, the Eagles fell to Kerman High School by a difference of only three strokes, Feb. 28. The match was played at Kerman’s home course; Madera Municipal Golf Course, a course new to a few FC players. Five of the six FC players shot below their nine hole average of all rounds played beforehand.

The playing format most often used in high school golf consists of all six players on a team playing nine holes. Then, one score is left out as the best five are added together to form the final score.

Sophomore Daniel Cliff thought that the day went well, but he was disappointed with his personal efforts.

“For me, it wasn’t what I wanted, but I thought our team played well,” Cliff said. “I was excited to see how the score would turn out. The course was in good shape, I was pleased with the fairways and the greens and it was just a beautiful day for golf.

For the first time in the six year tenure of the Fresno Christian Golf program, all 6 players shot under 50. The players’ individual scores are as follows: Daniel Cliff (’15) – 46, Davis Borrego (’16) – 42, Christopher Grossman (’15) – 44, Alec Culver (’14) – 44, Christian Saylor (’14) – 45, Jason Kim (’14) – 49.

Despite this accomplishment, the Lions ended up with a better team score and handed the Eagles a loss in their first year of the match.

A major highlight of the match was Junior Christian Saylor, joining Cliff, Borrego, and Grosssman on the “birdie board”: the team’s chart tracking all birdies individuals have made this season. The birdie came on the fourth hole – a 506 yard par 5. Saylor hit the ball onto the green in two, using a 3 wood for his approach shot. After barely missing an “eagle” putt (two strokes below par), he tapped it in for birdie.

The Eagles’ next match will be at Riverside Golf Course against Yosemite High School, Mar. 4.
