EAGLES LOSE HOME GAME IN EXTRA INNINGS –5-2, March 13
For their third home game of the season, the Fresno Christian boys baseball team hosted Coalinga High School. However, with many key players out due to injury or illness, the Eagles found themselves shorthanded.
The game moved very quickly. Both teams struggled to get on base, as pitching dominated the game throughout. JP Caprioglio started for the Eagles and had a no hitter through five innings, but the offense struggled to put runs on the board. Likewise, Coalinga did not get a runner into scoring position until the sixth inning, but even then they could not capitalize. By the end of the seventh, the score remained 0-0.
As the teams headed into extra innings, Caprioglio stayed on the mound for the Eagles. However, Coalinga found their rhythm offensively and started connecting with pitches. After a few singles and a walk, Coalinga had the bases loaded with no outs. A wild pitch brought a runner home to score, and the batter reached first safely to reload the bases. The next batter drilled one into right center for a two RBI double, making it 3-0. The next hitter continued the rally by hitting a triple and scoring two more. As the Eagles came in to hit, they found themselves suddenly trailing by five.
After two quick outs, FC seemed to be down and out. However, the Eagles began to mount a two out rally as they had a runner on second and third. Sophomore Matt Ely hit a double to drive them in, but it wasn’t enough. FC ran out of outs as they lost to Coalinga 5-2.
Senior Dominic Mendoza believes the game could have gone better, but he is proud of the way the younger guys stepped up and played.
“We could’ve played a little better.” Mendoza said, “We played well and went into extra innings but came up short in the end. But I can’t complain because we played hard and didn’t have all of our players, so it forced the younger guys to step up, and they held their own. By the time league rolls around and we get all of our players back, we’ll be in good shape.”
The Eagles fall to 1-5 overall and they remain 0-0 in the West Sequoia League.
The Eagles do not play for the rest of March, but will pick up their season on April 2 as they travel to Firebaugh to play the Eagles in a non-league matchup.
