After two long days of touring in New York City (NYC) the journalism staff headed to Columbia University for the 89th annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Spring Convention, March 20. Students attended various workshops that ranged from the basic fundamentals of journalism to advanced Editor-in-Chief training.

Later than last years, the conference started at 10 a.m. and ended at 4:15 p.m. where each journalism attendee is required to visit as many workshops as possible. Different sessions consisted of: broadcasting, print newspaper, multimedia, copy and editing, photography and much more.

During the lunch break the staffers visited Tom’s Restaurant, famously known for serving the hit sitcom Seinfeld. Open for business and family owned since 1940, Tom’s has served top quality diner food in Morning Heights and will continue to satisfy the staffers each time. After the the hardy lunch, some decided to browse through the Columbia University gift shop under the Lerner Center.

After the convention the students headed back to their hotel for a quick repose, and then headed over for an early dinner at Dallas BBQ. Seated in the second level of the restaurant, the staffers ate, relaxed and reminisced on the previous days of the trip. Some of the popular meals consisted of Texan sweet tea, corn bread, baby back ribs and various red-meat dishes. With only two hours remaining, everyone quickly hurried back to the hotel to get ready for the evening show.

After a long day of listening to peers and professors lecture, at 7:30 p.m. the staffers dressed-up for the eighth showing of Matilda at the Shubert Theatre on 225 West 44th Street. Officially not on Broadway, the previewing of Matilda was open to many spectators over the last eight days. Matilda is directed by Matthew Warchus and choreographed by Peter Darling.

To end the long day, the students decided to eat dessert at Juniors Restaurant, but instead some were hungry and ordered regular entrees. Famous for their American diner attributes, the food ranged from chicken fried steak, various deli sandwiches to delectable Italian entrees. Loosing track of time the staffers clocked out at 12:25 a.m., but still had more journalism to finish before sleep could be encountered.
