EAGLES FALL IN LAST NON-LEAGUE GAME, April 2

For their last game before West Sequoia League play kicks off, the Eagles traveled to Firebaugh High School to face the Eagles, April 2. FC was looking to grab one more victory before they dove into league. However, Firebaugh stood in their way.

Firebaugh put their ace pitcher Danny Perez on the mound and the Eagles struggled to hit his fastball-slider combination. For FC, Sophomore Ben Callahan took the hill, but struggled to keep Firebaugh’s potent lineup off the base paths, giving up three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. FC remained hitless through two as the score read 5-0.

Scoring for Firebaugh died down a little in the third, but picked up again in the fourth. The Eagles, on the other hand, could not capitalize on their few opportunities as they continued to struggle at the plate. After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, Firebaugh maintained their 8-0 lead.

FC then brought in Senior JP Caprioglio to try and stop the scoring. While Caprioglio did his job on the mound, the defense struggled as they gave up a few errors leading to three Firebaugh runs. Later, Caprioglio was drilled by a line drive up the middle and was taken out of the game, being replaced by Matt Jenkins, ’13, to finish the game.

In the seventh, Firebaugh brought in a new pitcher, but FC failed to get base runners and start a rally. In the end, Firebaugh was victorious with a final score of 11-0.

With the loss, FC falls to 1-6 on the year, while Firebaugh improves to 11-6.

Freshman outfielder Dawson Oquist says it was disappointing to lose, but felt the team played very well against a quality opponent.

“It went better than I expected,” Oquist said, “considering we were playing one of the top teams from D4. The hits didn’t come around and the infield struggled, but our outfield played well. Overall it was a good showing considering we hadn’t practiced at all over Easter.”

The Eagles will next host the first game of WSL play as they play the Parlier Panthers, April 9.
