SF: Seaside stories, Day 2 (VIDEO)

To begin the second day in San Francisco, eight of the Feather staffers (not including the seniors) and advisor Greg Stobbe all gathered down in the Marriott Marquis lobby promptly at 7:30 a.m. to sign up for the day’s journalism classes, April 25.

With an extra caffeine boost provided from the hotel’s Starbucks, the students were able to choose from a selection of five courses to attend including an Advanced Photoshop, a Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism tour, KQED Radio/TV/Digital Media class, a tour of the San Francisco Chronicle and a Ustream broadcasting class.

After the tours and classes finished at around 12 p.m., the staff met in the Golden Gate Exhibit Hall for check in and registration. Here the students received their name tags, including the Pacemaker finalist ribbons, along with free pins and badges from booths around the room.

For lunch, the staff members gathered down the street from the hotel at a 50’s themed diner, Mel’s Drive-In. Following the late lunch, the students returned to their hotel rooms for a quick nap and journalism writing, which was later followed by meeting again for the conference.

At 7:30 p.m. the Feather staff met down in the Yerba Buena Ballroom for an inspirational speech about the impact of journalism by keynote speaker and author of Juvenile in Justice, Professor Richard Ross. The convention conference also featured the 2012 National Journalism High School Student of the Year, Kelsey Bell.

For a late night snack after the conference, the staff walked to a nearby Denny’s to relax after the days hectic schedule. As the day ends, the staffers work to publish the day’s events and stories.
