Softball sport shorts: Fowler

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL SPORT SHORTS, 2012-13–
(Scrimmages do not count toward win/loss record. Visit the Sports Section for girls’ softball features. For a simple overview of scores and upcoming games, check the Spring sport box scores, 2013 for dates, opponents and times for all Eagle sports.)

Be sure to visit the 2012-13 girls’ softball schedule, home page, or check out Maxpreps.com. The Eagles are currently 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the West Sequoia League as of April 29. The Eagles will next play against the Minarets Mustangs, May 2.

REDCATS TOP EAGLES, 11-0
The Eagles traveled to play the Fowler Redcats in their seventh league game of the 2012-2013 season, April 29. The Eagles were unable to score in the first inning, and the Redcats took the lead in their first ups with seven runs. The second inning also produced no runs for FC, but Fowler was able to add two runs to their score.

The third inning remained scoreless for both teams, keeping the score at 9-0, Fowler, but in the fourth inning the home team earned two runs. As the Eagles were unable to score in the fifth inning, the game was called according to the ten-run mercy rule, and the Redcats defeated FC, 11-0.

Assistant coach Audrey Tamondong believes that the Eagles lost mainly because they did not truly believe that they could win this game. She realizes that in order to be successful, each member of a team has to have faith in herself as well as in the other players, regardless of who their opponent is. According to Tamondong, FC just did not have that kind of confidence against Fowler.

“Whenever a person walks into a situation already feeling defeated, chances are they will be defeated,” Tamondong said. “We lost because we walked on that field as an already defeated team. They [Fowler] in a sense did not beat us; we beat ourselves.”

Tamondong wants to see her team go out onto the field in their next game with more confidence in themselves and in each other. She and the rest of the coaching staff believe that the Eagles are capable of winning; now they are just trying to help the girls believe that too.

“I hope that next game our team shows up with a good attitude, heart and a strong will to play to the best of their potential,” Tamondong said. “It is what lacked on Monday overall. Next game, we need to show up as a team to play 120%.”

The Eagles will next play the Minarets Mustangs at home, May 2 at 4 p.m.
