Eagles take victory despite different game atmosphere, Oct. 2

The FC Eagles took a two-hour drive to face the Alpaugh High School Buffaloes. This was the last preseason game for the Eagles before they started league.

The atmosphere for this game was much different from the one they played earlier in the week. As they entered the gym, music was blasting and the echoes of screaming fans made it almost impossible to hear the person next to you.

Sophomore Jennifer King felt the atmosphere of this game was drastically different from their previous game against Summit Charter.

“I think the loudness of the gym made us panic a little bit,” King said. “It made us realize that we needed to refocus. We also had to make sure our voices were louder than all the other voices in the gym so that we wouldn’t lack communication.”

With this in mind, the Eagles started off the first match slow, however, they were able to overcome the intensity of the noise and beat the Buffaloes, 25-17.

By the second match, the Eagles seemed to no longer be phased by the commotion and defeated Alpaugh, 25-5.

At this point in the game, Coach Jonathan Penberthy saw an opportunity for the nonstarters to get a chance to play.

“They benefit from having playing time because it allows them to feel like they are participating and being more a part of the team,” Penberthy said. “It gives them a chance to show what they have been working on in practice and starts to prepare them if they are under classmen for the varsity next year.”

Even with the change in the line-up, the Eagles came out victorious over the Buffaloes, 25-21.

Senior Ashley Garcia saw the team continue to make improvements, but still sees areas they need to work on if they want to go far this season.

“One thing I feel we improved upon from our previous game was that we played with more heart,” Garcia said. “I honestly think that the loudness in the gym pumped us up and really motivated us to work harder. Something that I think we need to still work on is our passing. It needs to be a lot more precise for us to be able to run an aggressive offensive play.”

Next, the Eagles will travel to Caruthers High School to face the Blue Raiders, Oct. 7.
