Low turnover, commitment highlight 25 years of Christian education

While most students remain on campus for four years, many of them do not realize the long term commitment teachers exhibit. Now in its 26th year, Fresno Christian Schools have had a number of faculty or staff members serving on campus for 19 years or more.

“God uniquely prepared us to be here,” Tim Wilkins, superintendent, said. “Whether newbies or oldies and goodies, we were all hand picked to blend together into this family.”

Some faculty members who have been involved in the FC high school program for over 19 years include: George Freeman, Eunice McEntee, Scott Callisch, and Principal Gary Schultz. According to Wilkins, God’s call has been individually placed on each FC teacher, not just to Christian education, but specifically to this school.

“The vice principal at my former school, Berean in Concord, told me that there was an opening for the basketball coaching position at Fresno Christian,” Callisch said. “I’d never been to Fresno and after being here a while I got married and decided to stay. The highlight of my 19-year career would have to be winning the basketball Valley championship in ’97 and beating Immanuel.”

Principal Schultz shares Callisch’s enthusiasm regarding his involvement in FC and says he was very pleased to accept the position.

“The determining factor of why I accepted this job is that I felt called by the Lord to accept,” Schultz said. “When I came I enjoyed it and I feel like I still have things to do.”

Schultz came to Fresno Christian more than 24 years ago. Immediately he was accepted into the faculty and began taking initiative as the new principal to improve the quality of FCS. Directed by God, Schultz feels that his commitment to the school is still just beginning.

“If God calls me elsewhere I’ll go, but that hasn’t happened yet,” Schultz said. “I enjoy the teachers, the students and the board and I’m happy with what we’ve accomplished here.”

After arriving at FCS Schultz stayed involved because of the fun excitement involved in starting a new school. According to Schultz it has been a great experience to be involved in making FC what it is today.

Many students recognize the commitment of these teachers, and appreciate the role they have played in each of their lives.

“I strongly appreciate our schools commitment to the youth of Fresno,” Sarah Damm, ’03, 13 year FC student, said. “The fact that FC has been around for 25 years is impressive in itself and I am very proud to have been apart of the experience.”
