WSL sets a non competitive environment for the schools that are usually rivals. They bring the student body leaders from each school together to converse about recent events going on at each school and discuss ways to make them better.
When attending one of the meetings you will find an array of food set up buffet style, the students arrive at all meetings at 10 a.m. and begin their day with a tour of the school guided by one of the leadership students from the host school. Each month the meetings change locations to the different schools in the leagues.
WSL begins every school year, although FC was not a part of the league last year due to the football team being in an independent league, we were able to join this year with a fresh start.
The WSL meetings are equipped with all Associate Student Body (ASB) students from the two leagues. That means all student body presidents, vice presidents, secretaries and other commissioners are involved in the meeting. These meetings have an agenda that are given to all the students; tables are set up in a square and the hosting school leads the meetings.
Senior and ASB president, Caleb Nale, enjoys the meetings and sees them as an opportunity to meet new people. Nale likes the community feel of the meetings and likes gaining insight on how the other school prepare for events.
“I think WSL is cool because rival teams, like sports team, get together and talk about stuff that we do around our school,” Nale said. “We go around and share our ideas and even do stuff together during the meetings. One thing I really like about WSL is that we get to make new friends from other schools and see them around when we go to their campus and play sports. Its just a great way to connect with the community.”
A favorite event that is put on that involves the whole league is the WSL Talent Show. The last WSL Talent show was put on in the spring of 2012. Two to three contestants are picked from each school in the league to compete in the talent show. The talents vary from singing, dancing, comedy acts, magic shows and many more. The league is excited to bring it talent show for the spring of 2014.
Memories are made from the talent show, one of the Elora Hargis’, ’14, favorite memory from the talent show was her freshman year was when alumnus Danny Ibarra and senior John Teixiera performed with ukuleles.
“I really enjoy the talent show,” Hargis said. “My favorite memory came from freshmen year when Danny and John played the ukulele together. It was a really good performance and it was neat to see a freshman and senior join together to perform. You just wouldn’t put those two together to do an act, it was great.”
There are multiple aspects to being apart of a league and meeting with them frequently. Sharing ideas, league talent shows and meeting other students from the community is said to be a great way to unite the school.
FC has taken part of the WSL meetings for over six years and have enjoyed being apart of the meetings as told by leadership advisor, Robert Foshee.
“I think its great that we’rea apart of the league and attend these meetings,” Foshee said. “Its great just hearing different idea from all the schools and seeing what they do for their lunch, what they do for rallies, and what they do for signs. I think its also a great way to share our faith through our actions to the schools who might not be christians.”
The meetings provide opportunity for all the schools in the league to share and discuss ideas for the upcoming year. Such as ideas for homecoming, formal, fundraising and many other things that the leadership classes are involved in. Events commissioner Viviana Hinojosa, ’14, enjoys attending the meetings, to get more ideas that could be helpful to the FC leadership class.
“These meetings are great and so informative,” Hinojosa said. “I am the events commissionar for the leadership class so attending these meetings really provides me with great ideas to bring back to FC. I hope the school continues to go to these meetings in the upcoming years because we really benefit from being a part of these meetings.”
While the next WSL meeting is scheduled for January, the date and place is yet to be determined. Please check the Daily News menu bar at the top right for additional information in the weeks to come.
