EAGLES VIE FOR SPOT IN CHAMPIONSHIP
FC defeats Arvin, 2-1
After just arriving in Bakersfield, the FC soccer team dressed in maroon for the first game of the Garces Tournament against the Arvin Bears, Dec. 20. Shaking off the time spent sitting in the car on the drive down, the Eagles started the game a little slow.
During the first 20 minutes of the game, captain Tynin Fries, No. 4, was able to score a goal from kicking outside the 18 yard line. The first half ended in favor of the Eagles, 1-0.
As the second half began, the Arvin Bears, pressured the defense and managed to sneak in a goal. Feeling the heat, the Eagles successfully got a second goal by junior Gaby Siquerios from an assist from freshman Jennifer King, finishing the game, 2-1 with a win for the Eagles.
“The pressure to not lose the first game was high because we wanted to make it to the championships this year,” King said. “Even though we started out a little rusty, we came together as a team, winning the game.”
Since the FC Eagles won this game, they would be playing for the top four places for the bronze bracket in the Garces Tournament.
FC defeats Orcutt, 4-2
Coming back to the field the next day, the Eagles prepared to take on the Orcutt Academy Spartans with a morning game, Dec. 21. Feeling motivated from the last win, FC came out on the field with confidence and strategy.
Within the first half of the game, captain Annalise Rosik scored from a penalty kick inside the goal box. Following Rosik?s kick, captain Tynin Fries and junior Gaby Siquerios both scored goal for the FC team, ending the first half, 3-0.
“The second game was the hardest team we played, but we showed up ready to win,” Rosik said. “We really began to gel as a team and I felt like we could win the whole tournament based on the way we came together that game.”
Having their guard down, the Spartans were able to make two goals near the beginning of the second half. Coming back in the end, again Rosik scored a goal, ending with a final score of 4-2.
Because of the Eagles? win, they would now move forward to play in the championship game the same day.
FC defeats Rosemond, 5-0
After having a couple hours to rest between the games, the Eagles returned to the field with the excitement of making it to the championships, Dec. 21. The FC Eagles played against the Rosamond Roadrunners for the first place slot.
Feeling the competition, the Roadrunners fouled the Eagles twice inside the box, resulting in penalty kicks and two goals for the Eagles. Before the first half finished, captain Tynin Fries headed the ball in the goal from a penalty kick, ending the half, 3-0.
The Eagles were able to hold off the Roadrunners and score two more goals from sophomore Brittany Bender and another from Fries, ending the game 5-0 for the Eagles.
Even with the starting line being switched, head coach Tony Martinez was pleased that the team was able to come through and win the championships.
“The Garces Tournament was a great tournament for us,” Martinez said. “It showed we can compete at a championship level. We changed out line up and scheme of play and the girls started out a little slow, then stepped up to the challenge. The end result was winning a championship. The girls are coming along great.”
The FC Eagles won first place in the bronze bracket for the Garces Tournament.
The Eagles will next travel to play against Mendota High School, Jan. 9.
