EAGLES ARE DEFEATED BY CARUTHERS, FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON
The FC Eagles hosted their first home game of the season against Caruthers Blue Raiders, Jan. 13. The girls soccer had already played the Blue Raiders in the Fowler Lions Tournament, Dec. 7.
Previously having played the Blue Raiders, the Eagles knew the competition that would be expected from this team. Excited after the win against the Mendota Aztecs, the Eagles were confident about the game.
With the start of the game, the Eagles pressured the ball and for most of the first half, the Eagles appeared to be holding the advantage. Before the first half ended, the Blue Raiders managed to take the ball and score three goals ending the half (3-0) for the Blue Raiders.
“The game did not go as planned,” Ibarra said. “We played very timidly and it showed through our performance on the field. Hopefully the next time we see them we will be able to prove ourselves and show them and FC that we are capable of challenging them.”
After a pep talk from both the coaches during half time, the team came out strong and was able to score a goal within the first couple minutes of the second half. Towards the end of the game, a Blue Raider was fouled inside the box, resulting to a penalty kick and a goal. The game finished with another goal from Caruthers, ending the game (5-1).
“The Caruthers game was a learning experience for us,” Martinez said. “We learned what our weaknesses were as well as what we needed to improve on with our strengths. I think we will rebound and get back on track.”
