The Feather website was constructed during 2001 from scratch. A few students along with web designers put their heads together to craft what we see when visiting the online newspaper.
However over the years, technology continues to change, evolve and update. Due to The Feather not updating their code the program has accumulated various glitches and issues.
IT Director, David Martens, is in the process of finding and fixing the said program deficiencies.
“The Feather was written quite a number of years ago, as far as coded,” Martins said. “The standards for technology have changed but we haven’t kept up with the standards.”
The glitches on the site are mostly experienced by those working behind the scenes. The staff and editors have been experiencing a lack of properly functioning links, slow processing and unsaved articles.
“Because we have not updated the site, our hosting provider decided to not allow some of the older standards,” Martens said. “This means I have to go through and recode hundreds of PHP pages in order to get things running smoothly again.”
As expected with delayed and manual updating, the time frame for the necessary fixes may be an extended period.
“I am not entirely sure just how long the updating process may be, but I will attempt to do it as swiftly as possible,” Martens said. “There are many things to be done and we will have to confront the problems as we come to them.”
Some of the expected site problems for viewers include: Daily News, article printing problems, slow loading and The Feather survey, amongst others.
We apologize for the frustrations and inconveniences. The Feather team is actively addressing the obstacles. If readers find any additional errors, please contact the editors’ email: [email protected].
