EAGLES DROP HOME LEAGUE CONTEST, 5-4, Feb. 4
On Feb. 4, the FC boys soccer team played the Fowler Redcats. After coming back from an early 3-0 deficit, the Eagles lost 5-4 in extra time.
The Eagles played poorly for the first ten minutes of the game, giving up three early goals to Fowler. Following the third goal, the Eagles began to play with more intensity, preventing Fowler from scoring for the rest of the first half. With about ten minutes left in the first half, Josh Carter, ’16, scored on a penalty kick, bringing the Eagles within two, making the halftime score 3-1 Fowler.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to play with intensity, as both teams had several opportunities to score. However, neither team capitalized until ten minutes before the end of the game, when David Taylor scored on a pass from Taylor Howard, bringing the score to 3-2. The Eagles continued to have shots on goal, narrowly missing several times. With less than a minute left in the game, Carter scored again, tying the game.
Two periods of ten minutes each were added to the game to break the tie. The first ten minutes were scoreless, but halfway through the second period, Fowler scored, pulling ahead. However, with about three minutes remaining, FC struck back when captain Christian Saylor, ’14, played the ball to Caleb Goodale, ’16, who headed the ball over the Fowler goalkeeper, again tying the game. However, Fowler was not done, scoring yet again to put the game away, resulting in the final score, 5-4.
Coach Matt Markarian observed that the team played well, but the loss was the result of small mistakes.
“We played a good game out there,” Markarian said. “We were playing our best soccer for all but ten minutes of that game, but those ten minutes cost us. It was the mental errors that hurt us, at the beginning of the game and with those goals at the end.”
Captain David Taylor, ’14, commented that the game was exciting, but the team has some areas in which to improve.
“The game went as we expected,” Taylor said. “We knew that we would score a lot and they would score a lot. It was a very exciting game. We need a little more work on defense and to talk more on the field.”
Jared Markarian, ’17, noted that both teams played hard in the close matchup.
“The game was intense,” Jared said. “Adrenaline was pumping for both teams. It was a close, physical game. I think we played with good effort.”
The Eagles play next at Minarets, Feb. 7.
