EAGLES SWEEP DOUBLE HEADER, March 8
The Eagle baseball team had their first home game this last Saturday as they hosted a double-header against the Knights of Stoneridge Christian. The Eagles looked to improve to their great start to the season after beating tranquility by ten runs in their first game of the season earlier in the week.
For the first game, senior Caleb Nale took the hill for the Eagles in his first start of the season. After a quick one-teo-three top half of the inning, FC got the bats rolling right away, taking a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning.
However, the Eagles found themselves in trouble deffensively as they walked several batters which allowed Stoneridge to stay in the game. Freshman George Castro came in to relieve Nale in the second and got the Eagles out of the jam. FC still held the lead 4-3 as they came up for their second round of at-bats.
The Eagles continued to pile up the runs and managed to keep the Knights off the basepaths. The game was called after the fourth inning due to the ten run “mercy rule”. The Eagles took game one 19-3.
After about a thirty minute break for lunch, the second game began with junior Dillon Owens taking the mound for the Eagles. Many of the Eagle starters were benched for the second game to give other players same game experience. Owens gave up one run before being replaced by senior David Ryu and later sophomore Tyler Sellers.
Offensively, FC was walked early and often which lead to most of their runs. The game was capped off by a solo homerun by sophomore Bailey Brogan in the bottom of the fifth inning which resulted in the mercy rule later that same inning. FC won game two 12-1.
Brogan led the eagles offensively once more, going 2 for 2 in three at-bats with a double and solo homerun over the course of the two games. He has gone 6 for 6 with four RBIs over the first three games of the season.
Junior John Dooman says that the two games were great for the team to get some experience under their belt, but they still have a lingnnoegged way to go and can’t get ahead of themselves.
“The two games taught us that we still have a long way to go.” Dooman said, Even though we won both of the games pretty easily, we still have a lot of things to work on, especially pitching. The only reason they scored was due to pitching errors. Even though they weren’t major mistakes, we have to cut down on those and can’t get ahead of ourselves if we want to be some of the better teams in our league.”
The Eagles next game will be on Friday, March 14 as FC will host the visiting Tranquility Tigers in a rematch of the March 5th game.
