After finishing day three in New York, alarms went off at at 7 a.m. as The Feather staff prepared to leave for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Spring Convention promptly at 8:10 a.m. Once the hustle and bustle to load the subway was over, the staff finally arrived to Columbia University for a day filled with class sessions.
Editor-in-chief, Tynin Fries, and Senior Editor, Viviana Hinojosa, started off the day by teaching a session titled, ‘Thriving in Cyberspace.’ The editors spoke on how to be successful in running an online newspaper and the impact that social media has in the online world.
Lunch finally arrived and students had a variety of places to choose from around the Columbia University area. For instance, one group chose to feast at the infamous Tom’s Restaurant, where the sitcom Seinfeld used the exterior for their show.
Once the day at Columbia was over, adviser, Greg Stobbe, took the staff to Central Park for a time of exploring. Most of the staff enjoyed seeing different points of the park that had been in movies, such as the bridge where the christmas movie Elf was filmed at. The team walked through Shakespeare’s Garden and some even enjoyed at hot dog from the corner food stand.
After venturing through Central Park, students walked back to Hotel Edison, for a rest period. Students had the option of using the two hour period, before a show, for sleep or shopping. As soon as the time passed, the staff was expected to be ready to go to for the night’s showing of Cinderella.
The show began at 8 p.m. as the audience was greeted by a song from the lead character Carly Rae Jepsen. Ten minutes into the show, spectators applauded for the entrance of Fran Drescher, playing the role of the evil step-mother.
To end the evening, staffers made their way to Juniors for a late dinner. Due to a packed house, the staff was forced to sit at separate tables. Afterwards, the ready-to-head-home staff made their way to the elevators of the hotel to get some sleep and prepare for another eventful day.
