After a long week of journalism, classes, and touring New York City, the students gladly took the offer of an extra hour sleep from staff adviser Greg Stobbe before starting the day, March 21. Preceding the addition of sleeping time, the staff all gathered in the Edison Hotel lobby before leaving for Columbia University at 9:30 a.m.
The day started similar to the one before, in that students were to attend two classes that were provided through the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). These classes range from a Journalism Swap Shop to Covering Controversial and Sensitive Stories.
A lunch break was given to the students after a class at 12:30. From here the students were able to walk off the campus and choose to eat anywhere within the vicinity of Columbia.
The Feather staffers meet together a little before 1:45 to gather in a group before the awards ceremony started. At exactly 2:30 the doors to the convention opened, filling the room with over 4,000 journalism and yearbook staffers.
The team waited in anticipation for the crowning ceremony to begin, while Executive Director of the CSPA, Ed Sullivan, gave the introductions for the conference. From here, the staffers waited for in alphabetical order for The Feathers award. Within thirty minutes The Feather proudly took away the second consecutive Gold Crown.
Being in the celebratory mood, Stobbe gifted the staff with a trip to America’s largest Macy’s store, which contains some of the only wooden escalators, still in working order, existing in the world today.
Since it was the last night The Feather would be in New York City, the staff decided to have a nice dinner at Buca?s, an Italian restaurant, a couple of blocks from the hotel. Subsequent to the late dinner, the staff was able to either freely go back to the hotel or go out for ice cream at a nearby parlor.
