TEAM BATTLES AGAINST KINGSBURG, MARCH 18
After losing to Kingsburg High School last season, Eagles seized their victory against them this season, winning two consecutive matches held at Kings River Golf and Country Club, March 11 and at Riverside Golf Course, March 18.
FIRST MATCH
Eagles pulled off a victory, (FC 225, Kingsburg 244), after having an unusual day for the bottom three men. Despite the high scores, the Eagles topped their opponents with nearly 20 strokes difference.
Golf coach Jeff Hopper, hopes to find more consistency and better rounds from the rest of the team despite their win.
“Our top three guys really got the job done today on a course that always invites disaster,” Hopper said. “Michael got off to a great start, with par-birdie, then played without major error the rest of the way to lead the way. This course, though, is unforgiving in many ways and our last three guys struggled.”
SECOND MATCH
The home course invited the Eagles with better scores (FC 214, Kingsburg 249), as a team although the last man, Trevor Beal, ’15, experienced an unusual day on the course.
Hopper is satisfied with most scores since many of the team members pulled off their consistent score.
“We played short-handed today in taking on Kingsburg, but with the top three going out very strong and Jason playing his best round at Riverside this season, we really looked good,” Hopper said. “Daniel’s game has been coming into form, with his driver in play much of the time. This is allowing him to put up increasingly consistent scores by being in position for pars and birdies all the time.”
According to Hopper, the scores are surely improving as players experience more rounds on the golf course.
“I was proud of the fight that Michael and Davis showed,” Hopper said. “These guys were a combined six-over through five holes and played the last four holes a combined one-under. That is exactly what we talk about when we insist on not giving up. And Jason finished strong, too, with two closing pars to seal that 43.”
