Nine seniors bid goodbye after 13 years

Beginning anew at a different school is a normal part of most students’ school career. Yet for a small number of students on campus, the only change they have made has been from one FC campus to another. Although several seniors have been at the school for more than 10 years, only nine hit the mark of attending for all 13 years.

“It is really cool to look back at some of my classmates and have memories with them since kindergarten or first grade,” Danielle Roberts said. “I remember that in first grade a group of us liked to play house during recess and Mike Van Beek always wanted to be the dog.”

Only attending one school offers students an experience unlike any other.

“I still remember my first grade year,” Van Beek said. “Mrs. [Gladys] Kerfoot wasn’t going to let me in unless I learned how to skip first. I don’t where I would be today without her acceptance and interest in me. She also read a lot of stories to us and I was entranced by the beauty of her voice. She made learning fun.”

Many feel that, due to the school’s small size, the opportunity to get to know the teachers is a bonus.

“I have enjoyed getting to know all of the teachers,” Hannah Page said. “It is different for me with my dad being a teacher here, but I have gotten used to it. I like how all of the teachers care about you and take the time to get to know you personally.”

For some, the opportunity offered by a small school to be more involved in sports has been a highlight of their FC career.

“Playing football has been the best part of my experience here,” Sam Fisher said. “Being able to be involved in the program has been great and it has allowed me to form good lifelong relationships.”

Amongst other reasons to stay at FC, the spiritual aspect the school provides has brought them back year after year. Events such as weekly chapels and Spiritual Emphasis Week are unique to the environment at FC.

“There is an incomparable spiritual atmosphere at this school,” Jonathan Howard said. “It is a place unlike church in that the teachers not only demonstrate Christ’s love to us but they also have the opportunity to show us His mercy when we mess up for the sake of our spiritual growth.”

After time spent at FC, the class of 2003 leaves a legacy to underclassmen while cherishing the memories gathered from their time spent on campus.
