Paris trip proves fun and educational

[/media-credit] A group of parents and students traveled to Paris on an 18-day educational trip with teacher Greg Stobbe to France and Belgium in June 2001.

Travel and tourism were of top interest this last June for those who accompanied English teacher Greg Stobbe in his trip to France and Belgium. The 18-day visit included chateaus and countryside, as well as culture and city life.

“It was the best trip I have ever taken for my money,” Jeff Torosian, ’03, said, “and Stobbe was the greatest teacher ever. He was very hands-on and interactive with us. He was also very educated about the places and buildings we visited. But this Paris trip proves fun and educational can be in the same sentence.”

The trip included 16 overnight stays in first-class, superior tourist, or tourist class hotels.

“The hotels in Paris were not as great, on account that our space was so cramped,” Jillian Childress, ’02, said. ” But as we went on, they on got nicer. I especially enjoyed the hotel we stayed in on the beach on the shore of the English Channel.” The group was also accompanied by the full-time service of an EF Tour Director. The group was also supplied with a coach, train and ferry transfers as well.

“After the students decided not to speak in ridiculous British accents,” Stobbe said, “our tour guide, Emily, or just ‘Em’, led our group in a knowledgeable, confident manner.”

Other travel features included eight comprehensive sightseeing tours led by local guides, 28 visits to special attractions, one EF walking tour, and a 3-day metro pass in Paris.

“Europe was a very exciting time,” Byron Erkenbrecher, ’03, said. “Surprise appearances from the animal were very interesting. Jeff, Mike, Dave, Jay, and I had the greatest time. French Fireworks are nice, and the loft–oh, that’s another story.”

The tourists had many unique stories to tell about the trip, such as “the revolution,” where each person bought a fake, plastic sword and held a beach battle at St. Malo on the English Channel coast.

For any person that is interested in a trip like this, they should contact Greg Stobbe in the English department. He is currently considering a Washington D.C. trip in June of 2002.
