The 2013-2014 golf team finished second in the North Area Division II tournament. One player advanced to the individual section tournament: freshman Michael Cliff.

Cliff set a freshman 9-hole average record at FC shooting an average of 37.5 over the course of the season. His average is the second lowest all time at FC.

Daniel Cliff is the older brother of Michael Cliff. Daniel has watched Michael blossom over his golf career.

Daniel explained his brother’s journey.

“Michael puts in just as much work into his golfing abilities as I do,” Daniel said. “We always practice together and I like to think that some of my advice has helped him become as good of a player as he can be.”

Fresno Christian Golf takes WSL for the second consecutive year under the mentoring and leadership of coach their coach, Jeff Hopper.

The top six golfers in the league receive medals of recognition. This is similar to other sports all-league selections.

Last season the team took four of the top six medals. This season five of the medalists were from FC.

Medalists included, Michael Cliff, ’17, Davis Borego, 16′, Daniel Cliff, ’15, Christopher Grossman, ’15, and Trevor Beal, ’15.

The team demonstrated tremendous fight and heart during their league championship match. They had to compete against each other for the top five spots.

This year the Eagles lost three matches the entire year. One against division one powerhouse Bullard high school, and two others to top division two teams.

Even though I will not be a part of the team next year I expect big things from the team. If the returning players keep practicing and developing their skills they could be one of the best teams to ever play together at Fresno Christian. — Jason Kim

The team will lose one athlete to graduation: Jason Kim. Kim has played on the varsity golf team for three years. He was considered the team’s leader in practices and kept all of the members in line; his hard work ethic set the tone for the other players.

Kim was encouraging yet stern with his team mates. Michael Cliff, ’17, expounded upon Kim’s leadership.

“Jason was one of my favorite team mates this year,” Cliff said. “Being a freshman on the team meant that I had extra duties. Jason made me complete them but he encouraged me while I was doing them .”

With five returning players the team expects to go deeper into the section and eventually state playoff matches.

Senior Jason Kim vocalized his expectations for his team mates next season.

“Even though I will not be a part of the team next year I expect big things from the team,” Kim said. “If the returning players keep practicing and developing their skills they could be one of the best teams to ever play together at Fresno Christian.”

Michael, who qualified to participate in individual competition (as previously mentioned) will play on May 20 at Riverbend Golf Course in Madera for a chance to qualify for the next round.

The team will have five returning players next season, six players are needed for a full team. Athletic director, Mick Fuller, shared his hopes for the future golf team.

“The golf team is a great group of boys,” Fuller said. “They all play golf very well and for that I am proud of all of them. With nearly the whole team returning next year, I feel hopeful that they could be strong competitors for the division two championship.”
