The boys’ soccer team kicked off their season with a 4-0 victory over Central Valley Christian on Dec. 2. Teamwork turned the Eagles’ victory into reality, with three different players scoring goals. Kyle Brewer, ’07, Clinton Jeffries,’04, and Tim Westra, ’05, each scored goals.
The team has two captains, Jeffries and Rusty Tucker, ’04. Fellow teammates view them as vital to the success of their season.
“I started playing soccer in kindergarten and just stayed with it,” Tucker said. “I’ve been on varsity for four years, so I know the game and how to lead.”
The Eagles dressed only five seniors for their win against the Cavaliers.
“Each year brings another unique team,” Tucker said. “Defense keeps you in games, but you need points to win. Our offense needs fine tuning, but we will be fine for this season.”
The Eagles’ defense allowed few offensive chances the entire game.
“We have a very strong defense for a young team,” Jeffries said. “I think we can really go far in this season if our hearts are into it.”
Boys’ soccer practices frequently run beyond a two-hour time frame. No matter what the weather conditions, the team views practice as a prerequisite for a successful season.
“This win against CVC has really inspired us to work harder,” Brewer said. “We are really pushing ourselves in practice so we can have a great season.”
The team will be playing in tournaments in December. They will travel with the girls’ team to Bakersfield to play in the Garces Tournament on Dec. 19-20. The boys will also play in the Clovis West Invitational Tournament Jan. 1-4.
