Boys’ basketball tipped off their season with huge wins in Kerman. However, not content with just that, the varsity team continued to push forward to new levels by winning the Silver Championship in the San Diego Tournament by going 2-3 overall.
“Playing in the Kerman Tournament was fun,” Josh Wright, ’05, said. “It was good playing better schools, and beating them. In San Diego, the teams were very difficult, but we kept going at it and won a few games.”
The team faced obstacles of limited sleep, six hour car rides, and missed classes, but responded by proving victorious in their games.
“We didn’t have high expectations going into the tournament,” Ross Charest, ’05, said. “We knew what we were capable of and shocked a lot of teams.” Charest was named to the All-Tournament team while averaging 19 points per game.
Although the team faced a difficult early loss to Francis Parker, they remained motivated to fight another day. Parker is a high school team that went to the Gold Championship for the past several years, and averages 85 points a game.
“We suffered a tough loss to Parker,” Wesley Wells, ’06, said. “It’s hard taking a loss, but we rebounded back. The team learned a lot in our loss and we now know what to improve on.”
According to Mike Neal, head varsity coach, the basketball team will work harder than ever before their next tournament.
“”We learned a lot about ourselves as a team on what and how much we all can do,”” Neal said. “”We went 2-3 in the tournament and captured the Silver Championship [consolation championship] and I was pleased with that.””
The varsity plans on spending the days after Christmas practicing for league games.
“I expect our team will do very well at this upcoming Coast Union Tournament,” Layne Meadows, ’05, said. “We plan on doing our best by playing hard.”
Currently the boys are 5-4 overall and will play in the Coast Union Tournament, Dec. 18-20. For more information on boys basketball contact the high school office at 299-1695, ext. 5.
