Media images damage female self-esteem

Whether leafing through magazines or watching television, women often compare themselves to the other models, actresses, which the media projects as icons. Yet teen girls are beginning to recognize that the media’s portrayal of outer beauty may damage the self-esteem of females.

While it may help girls to pick up on what the new fashion trends in clothes or make up, it might not fit their body type or face shape. Not only does this hurt their image, but it wastes their money on clothing items and makeup that do not look good on them.

When flipping through magazines girls look at the women portrayed, and, they are not satisfied with themselves. Some will do anything to look like a model.

As a result, girls may suffer from anorexia, bulimia or depression.

The most important reason to avoid the media’s influence is young teens’ predisposition to depression because their self-esteem is easily injured.

Finally, the most important influence the media has is causing girls to loosen their standards to please others. By doing this it influences them to show more skin in order to be sexy and to get more attention from guys.
