Teaching by example, David McEntee demonstrates how to properly handle the fragile porcelain crucibles used by students as part of the magnesium experiment in chemistry classes, Oct. 7.
The metal tongs used by the chemistry guru allow the small laboratory utensil used for conducting high-temperature chemical reactions to be moved. Without the tongs, injury to the hands would occur due to the scorching hot temperature the crucible endures.
After observing other groups from across the room, Tyler Duerr, ’10, is enticed by the idea of the hot temperatures and is inspired to experiment for his own.
