For 16 years, freshman English teacher Greg Stobbe’s mantra has been, “No helping verbs!”

Stobbe uses this phrase so often that English students dread the no-helping-verb speech that has become a daily ritual for them. As an encouragement to use more action verbs, Stobbe frequently reminds students that “verbs are your friends, helping verbs are your enemies.”

In order to play an ironic joke on their teacher, a group of anonymous freshmen posted a sign on Stobbe’s back for a Friday the 13th joke.
