With a goal of writing over 500 articles per school year, The Feather staff has earned the reputation as a daily high school newspaper. And, despite a chilly morning, a majority of the staff met on the steps of the Woodward Park Regional Library for the annual yearbook photo in November 2008.
The Feather Online now boasts over 40 members and has been a Pacemaker finalist four years in a row as one of the best high school newspapers in the country. This honor is awarded by the National Scholastic Press Association. The Feather Online has won this distinction twice: 2008 and 2006.
However, in April 2009, The Feather Online was awarded a Silver Crown by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in the first year the honor was presented. Sponsored by New York City’s Columbia University, a Crown is only given to the top seven high school newspapers in the United States.
Both of these national competitions do not have divisions and all schools in the country compete against each other regardless of size and state. According to their Web sites, the competitions are judged by the following criteria: design, navigation, writing/editing, graphics and interactivity.
