In the third quarter of FC’s game against Tranquillity, Chandler Vargas, ’12, took a hit knocking him off his feet. He had trouble breathing and potentially broke two of his ribs in the Eagles’, 45-19, loss, Oct. 8.
Vargas was then taken off the field in an ambulance and rushed to Community Medical Center. At the hospital, he was put on oxygen support, had an X-ray on his ribs and CAT scan to check for internal bleeding. Although nurses initially thought he had broken at least two ribs, he went home at 3 a.m. with bruised ribs and was breathing on his own.
“It was my first time in an ambulance, and I didn’t really know what was going on, so that was kind of scary,” Vargas said. “I just felt really bad, though, that I had left my team and that they then had to play with 14 guys.”
Just after Vargas’ injury, seniors Danny Ibarra and Josiah Ford were injured. Ibarra dislocated his shoulder and Ford strained his neck, forcing the squad down to 12 players.
