Lady Eagles look to show strength in league

The most competitive time of the year for varsity girls basketball is finally underway. Girls basketball transitions from preseason games to league play.

The Eagles hosted their first game against Parlier on Tuesday, January 9, in the FC Gym at 5:30 P.M. Despite being ahead for the first three quarters, the Lady Eagles lost 47-43 in a hard fought game.

The Lady Eagles are led by Robert Foshee, a familiar face on the campus. Attempts to reach Coach Foshee were unsuccessful. Mike Zamarripa also guides the team as the assistant coach.

Hannah Villines, ‘21, is thrilled to play her first season of varsity basketball. Despite being a freshman, she has been making an impact at the starting point guard position.

“I think our team has come a long way since the beginning of the year,” Villines said. “Our chemistry has grown so much and we’ve gotten so much closer as a team. I think we did really well in preseason, and we just went as hard as we could. We’ve just been preparing for league as much we can.”

The team surprised many during preseason when they defeated multiple teams including Coast Union and Trinity Christian. With the experience of seniors Erin Wilson and Tali Hill combined with younger teammates such as Villines and Hannah Van Noy, the Lady Eagles look to find success in league play as well.

Ashley Zamarripa, ’19, is a starter and captain for the team. She has been able to increase her leadership abilities greatly since she joined.

“I have learned that you need your teammates to win a game,” Zamarripa said. “Basketball is a team sport and you have to play as a team and that’s how you win games. Being a captain has helped me be more motivated during games because I realize that my attitude can affect the team. I expect us to play as a team and be excited for the game of basketball this year.”

The preseason games and tournaments have strengthened the team and prepared them for the most important part of their season. They will be hosting Fowler at home at 5:30, come out and support your varsity Lady Eagles.
