The Feather Featured Art series is chosen by art teacher Vickey Belmont who chooses unique pieces within their current unit. Art students study various techniques and different mediums throughout the school year. This feature art demonstrates the use of Oil Pastels.

Feature Art by Joseph Davila (The Feather)

Vickey Belmont assigned her first-year art students the task of exploring an artistic style they typically do not prefer: oil pastels. The student is supposed to recreate a 4×4 area of a masterpiece created by a renowned artist. This learning form is referred to as a “Master Study.” This learning approach has been utilized for centuries. The purpose of this project is for students to learn how to layer colors for effective blending, experiment with various blending techniques, and discover the importance of using paper with ‘tooth’ to properly apply oil pastels.

“I’m very happy with the results of the student’s oil pastel projects, some of them excelled with this medium while others may have just shown an interest, all of the pictures showed potential,” Belmont said, “It is really a great pleasure as an art teacher to introduce new art styles and media to students that may not have had the opportunity to try this form of art.”

“The Lovers II” painted by Rene Magritte (The Feather)

Art student, Joseph Davila ’27 is one of the first-year art students who participated in this project. He joined Fresno Christian’s art class because he loves to draw and create things and would like to get better at them. Davila chose to replicate the painting “The Lover II” by Rene Magritte.

“I really like how the artist is showing how love is blind, and that it doesn’t just happen with looks,” Davila said, “The two in the painting only know that they love each other no matter what the other person looks like.”
