Grandparents join FC community

Grandparents of K-12th graders join the Fresno Christian student body for the 28th annual Grandparents Day, Sept. 20.

The tradition of grandparents day, nationally celebrated on Sept. 8, recognizes the significance of grandparent figures, specifically through giving them time to spend with their grandkids in school.

For nearly three decades, FC has taken part in this holiday, giving grandparents special time and activities to do in classes.

Nearly 500 grandparents started off their day with a time to mingle over some coffee and pastries, followed by a time of worship lead by members of the student worship team. After being dismissed by superintendent Jeremy Brown and principals, Katie Reneau and Amy Deffenbacher, the group meets up with their grandkids to participate in their classrooms.

In classes, alternate assignments and projects are given to students in order to allow for participation by the grandparents. With that, they get a glimpse into the day to day schedule of their grandkids. Once classes end, the grandparents end their time at school by eating lunch with their grandkids and their friends.

Grandma of three FC students, Dianne Wright chooses to spend the day at school with her grandkids. Wright shares thoughts of thankfulness reflecting on the tradition.

“We love that Fresno Christian includes us as a part of their world,” Wright said. “We have something to learn from our grandkids and they also learn from us. I’m glad it’s each year because the kids grow up so much in a year with all the school teaches them. We have three grandkids at Fresno Christian, with our oldest graduating this year. God has blessed us with Fresno Christian for both our kids and our grandkids!”

As grandparents finish lunch and return back to their regular routines, students also return to their normal school schedule.
