In honor of National First Responders day, alumnus Koby Johns, ’93, was honored at Fresno City Hall with a Star of Life award for his heroic actions that saved a human life, Oct. 29.
The ceremony recognizes many fire crews and individuals for their life-saving actions.
Johns is a fire captain for the Fresno Fire Department and has been involved in fire fighting since 2005. On Dec. 29, 2018, Johns and his crew received a call for a person in cardiac arrest. After arriving on scene, Johns quickly started chest compressions and after several rounds of CPR by the Engine 7 crew, the patient regained a pulse. The patient was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where she made a full recovery. The heroics of the Engine 7 crew was only one of the many life changing stories shared during the ceremony.
Fire Captain and Alumnus, Koby Johns has received recognition before but this award had a unique value and stood alone.
“That award was special to me because we often perform CPR on people in cardiac arrest and the reality is that most people usually don’t come back to life,” said Johns. “On that particular day, someone did. As a christian I believe life is sacred and when you can be a part of saving someone’s, it’s special. It’s times like that where you feel you are fulfilling your purpose.”
Fresno Mayor Lee Brand, City Manager Wilma Quan, Fire Chief Kerri Donis along with other FFD staff honor these courageous men and women as they continue to serve everyday.
First Responders make a career of coming to people’s help in times of crisis. They are the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and emergency dispatchers who are always just a phone call away from our next emergency.
Make sure to thank first responders for serving others and for showing up.
