Photojournalist Annabelle Messer aims to connect the Fresno Christian student body by introducing various students in her ‘Get to know you’ series.
Get to know No. 3: Shirley Zhao
Get to know senior Shirley Zhao, Nov. 14. Zhao moved to America in 2016 from Shanghai, China. She chose to move to America for a different education and environment. She came to Fresno Christian two years ago.
On her free time Zhao likes to read, swim, shop, and hang out with her friends.
There are many differences between America and China in culture and society. A major difference that Zhao experienced while in America is church. In China, Zhao felt very disconnected from her church due to such a big age different with those around her. She enjoys American church much more because of the different environment.
Zhao explains why she chose Fresno Christian out of all the other high schools.
“I chose Fresno Christian because I wanted to go to a day school,” Zhao said. “The agency I came to America with told me I would have a good time at FCS. They said that it would not be too hard, and that it gave a free environment to study.”
Zhao continues to learn new culture and ways while living in America. While college applications open, Zhao has not made a decision on the next chapter and does not know whether she will further her education in the US or China.
Fun Facts:
- Zhao’s favorite candy is Vero Mango.
- Zhao’s favorite color is white.
- Zhao is involved in swimming, art, and volunteer work.
