Seniors in Robert Foshee’s economics class begin working on their annual budget project, Jan. 22. Students are challenged to live on a $1500 monthly budget to attempt living in the real world by paying for everything.
Seniors must make a weekly menu and budget out all of their food expenses. Along with finding a place to live, they must budget out taxes, transportation, monthly utilities, and medical insurance. They have the option to purchase cable/satellite tv, internet access, and cell phone usage. They will also set aside an amount for miscellaneous objects.
Senior Kayla Vanderlinden expresses the challenges of this project while trying to stay in budget.
“My main challenge for this project is trying to stay within $1500,” Vanderlinden said. “It is hard to find all the prices for the things I need, but I also enjoy learning about the different options. I had to take time to research to find the most affordable price which is good because it will prepare me for when I am on my own.”
The goal of this assignment is to prepare students for budgeting a minimum wage lifestyle in a expensive world.
