[Reel] Muscle Fatigue

Anatomy from The Feather Online on Vimeo.

Jacob Cantu’s Anatomy class experiences the effects of muscle fatigue during lab, Jan.26.

The activity kicks off by moving one’s arm up and down until exhaustion. After their arms viscerally ache they recorded their times on specific lab sheets with all their data. The experiment leads the students through multiple rounds and achy arms.

The purpose of such an experiment is to teach each student that there is only a limited amount of oxygen that can transport through muscle cells. Once the oxygen runs out there is a toxic chemical called lactic acid that causes muscle pain. Students need to learn about these things because it is the function of their own bodies.

The next analysis will have each person discover the properties of the cardiovascular system by dissecting the heart of a sheep.
