Now left with big shoes to fill, the Fresno Christian girls tennis team brings the heat for the 2024 season. After losing five seniors last year, the girls are seeking new leadership. A new influx of freshmen and sophomores have begun to join the roster to fill the missing spots. The team aspires for another great year, with the season’s first home match at 3:00 p.m. Aug 20 vs. Washington Union.
When asked about the loss of valued seniors, Lyla Hinton reflected on the previous season, acknowledging the impact of the five departing seniors.
“They (the five seniors) brought a lot of experience and joy to the courts, they made everything fun, and losing them was definitely hard,” Hinton said.
The team has lots of goals for the year as Hinton acknowledges.
“I think, number one, we’re going to have a lot of fun. It is going to be a great team experience.”
Incoming freshmen are excited to join the FC girls tennis family. While the seniors will be missed, the team has begun to bond and welcome in new talent, including Charlotte Karlson, ’28.
“I’m really excited because I like the girls on the team, as well as the coaches,” Karlson said. “‘Bulldog is very supportive, and Foshee is always honest.”
The team is expecting another great season of league matches. While in base Division IV, the girls hope to move into Division III. Head coach Robert Foshee expressed his excitement for the new season.
“We have a good group of juniors and seniors who have seen the other girls lead such as Lyla Hinton, K’lanna McArn, and Delaney Meyers,” Foshee said. “They are ready to make the team their own through practice and devotionals.”
The team will determine their ladder during practice in a series of “challenge matches.” The ladder helps decide who plays singles and doubles. These matches are a healthy way of keeping young athletes competitive, as well as helping the team put their best foot forward in league games.
Come see how all these young women lead on and off the court throughout the season! Home matches will be at least once a week.
