The real expense of Valentine’s Day

[/media-credit] 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchange annually.

Valentine’s Day is known to be one of  the biggest days to celebrate love and romance as an average consumer will spend approximately of $130.21 on Valentine’s Day each year, Feb. 14. Nation wide a total of $18,500,000,000 is spent, is the celebration of love worth it?

This holiday was started in memory of the legend St. Valentine who preached about Christianity while secretly marrying young christian couples in 260 AD. From this account, Valentine was imprisoned and executed along with the rest of the Christian church.

During Valentine’s imprisonment, he wrote the jailers daughter a letter signing “From your Valentine”. In present time, people use the word Valentine to refer to their significant other.

Though the idea of Valentine’s Day is to be with someone you love, not everyone has a partner to share it with. In which comes the alternative way to celebrate, ‘Galentine’s Day’.

Galentine’s Day, is an unofficial holiday celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, Feb 13. Its  idea is for women to express their value for their friendships and show love to one another. To celebrate, women tend to go out with friends or simply just stay home and have a movie night.

Valentine’s Day statistics:

  • 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged
  • 14%  of women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day
  • 61.8% consumers celebrate Valentine’s Day
  • 58 million pounds of chocolate will be purchased during the week of Valentine’s Day
