Experiencing hardships as well as success, international student Amanda (Chau) Phan ’21, shares insight on her experiences while coming to America, March 4.

At the age of 16, Phan first came to America with the help of her parents to pursue a higher education. Specialized in Vietnamese literature, physics and calculus, Phan expresses that one of the many opportunites she loves about U.S. schools is the option to take more prestigious courses.

“In Vietnam, all the students are expected to learn at the same level,” Phan said. “Since I came here, I’ve gained more confidence and have opened my interests to different subjects.”

Phan encourages current and future international students to not be afraid to try new things that they haven’t done before.

“Studying abroad has changed my perspective on academics, athleticism, spirituality and independence,” Phan said. “The program is supposed to be a journey of positive changes and experience. Always try to be involved in everything since its a process of learning and making mistakes.”

Along with her academic classes, Phan also involves herself in many different extracurriculars. She serves as part of 2019-’20 yearbook staff, FCS international club member and one of The Feather’s guest writers. Phan also participated in the varsity girls tennis and basketball teams.
