Winter sports season comes to an end

Winter sports season comes to an end
[/media-credit] All winter sports teams season have officially come to an end, March 3.

After Fresno Christian boys basketball and girls soccer won the CIF Central Section Division V Valley Championship, the winter sports season comes to a close after both teams lost in their first state playoffs games against Calaveras and Oakland, March 3.

Winter sports began practice on Oct. 16, and has carried its way through most of February. All student athletes practiced for several months while balancing school and other extra curricular activities.

The winter season brought many wins and loses from all five teams. Cheer secured FCC Grand Champion title for second year in a row. Varsity Boys basketball wins CIF Central Valley Championship at the Selland Arena. Girls soccer claims the CIF Central Section Division V Valley Championship.

Boys basketball:

Boys basketball continued to surprise the school this year. With action packed games twice a week and traveling to the Selland Arena to claim the title of CIF Central Section Division V Valley Championship. After seven years of leading as head coach, Jon Penberthy wins his first ever Valley Championship. The teams overall season record was 26-6. Key players this season were Orion Tomlinson ’22, Tyus Parrish-Tillman ’22, Carston Saelzler ’21, Ty Utah Coffman ’20 and Bryson Graham ’21.

Girls soccer:

Starting off the season, the Eagles claimed 1st place at the Garces Tournament, went undefeated in league claiming the title and finished off by winning the Valley Championship game. The 2019-2020 girls soccer team won the CIF Central Section Division V Valley Championship with an overall record of 22-2. In the Championship game senior goal keeper Kayden Marquez ’20 stopped 8 of 9 goals to preserve the teams win, 2-1, over Kerman.

Varsity cheer:

As cheer wrapped up football season, they began to prepare for basketball and competition season. The girls held practice at 7 a.m. before school on Wednesdays, cheered during basketball games at 7 p.m. and through sickness and injuries the girls still worked hard. Cheer competed in two competitions, FCC at Azusa Pacific and Clovis West Pep and Cheer showcase. They won title of FCC grand champions for the second year in a row along with 1st place and a superior rating at the showcase lead by head coach Hope Villines.

Boys soccer:

The boys soccer overall score was 16-5 under supervision of new head coach, Adam Smith. The boys were undefeated in league, 6-0, and continued their season until the semi-finals where they were defeated by Dos Palos, Feb. 19. When one player scores a goal, a smoke bomb would be lit by the designated smoke bomb committee, seniors Blake Deffenbacher and Wesley Hinton, which would keep the players motivated to score more.

Girls basketball:

The girls basketball overall total of the season was 7-10. Girls basketball is coached by leadership teacher, and the head varsity boys tennis coach, Robert Foshee. Key players this season were Hannah Villines ’21, Carlee Zamarripa ’22,  Brandy Penberthy ’23, Hannah Van Noy ’21, Tori Tarlton ’23 and Makayla Davila ’22.
