AP Biology teacher Jacob Cantu instructs his class on how to experiment with yeast enzyme cells.
Students add 10% yeast solution with 2% sodium alginate solution to a beaker. Small yeast spheres mix with the calcium lactate solution. The class tests alter elements of the experiment for scientific research. Changes in the temperatures, the pH level, and changes in enzyme concentration all affect the results.
Each week Cantu instructs his students on a new lab for the college-level class to experiment. Through trial and error, each set of lab partners test their hypothesis from a scientific viewpoint. Different reactions take place in varying environments. Seniors Rachel Martin and Sophia Adams test the change in temperature of a yeast environment.
Students prepare for AP test coming up in May. With less than 14 weeks left in the school year, the class has a smaller number of labs to complete. Cantu provides notes and lectures to help students process the advanced information better.
