Varsity GameDay cheerleaders compete in CIF State Cheer Championships and take home second place at Folsom High School, Jan. 31.
GameDay routines replicate the sideline cheers at football games performed on a larger scale. They focus on cheers for plays, crowd engagement, stunts and dances involving props. CIF State Championships hosted only 100 teams this year at Folsom High School with teams across California placing bids in hopes to be invited. They host not just GameDay but also Traditional and Co-ed competitions.
The Fresno Christian Varsity girls competed against seven other teams from all over the state. This experience marks the first time in program history that the team has received an invitation to compete. The cheerleaders took this newfound opportunity to bond as a group while making school history and fighting for the top spot. The day before the competition, coaches organized a bible study led by Junior Anne-Madelyn Morgan, a three-year varsity cheerleader and ASB chaplain who plays an important role in many school activities.
“It means the world to me being able to attend states for the first time and hosting a Bible study with this special team,” Morgan said. “The fact that we got to go out and share the light of Christ and show that even a small private school can do big things because we put the work in!”
Cheer coach Hope Villines has led the Varsity team since 2015, making history by sending the 2025-26 cheer team to the CIF State Championships.
“This team made school history!” Villines said. “Fresno Christian Cheer has never competed at the state level. This happens to be the inaugural year that GameDay Cheer was voted in by the board to be a division at the State Championships!”
