The slow hum of the golf cart and the smell of the freshly-cut grass on the tee box is familiar to the freshman leader Knox Berry, as he prepares to tee off. Knox is an outstanding golfer, with the lowest handicap on the team with a 7.8. Knox has taken much of his inspiration from well known, famous professional golfer, Scottie Scheffler.
Gavin Hoffman, ‘26, talks about what makes this year’s team special, as well as what makes this group of people special.
“This year’s team is unique because we have one of the best freshman players in the league – Knox Beery,” Hoffman said. “It’s also unique because we have guys like Blake Bridges, Will Alh, and Josh Kubota, who are really good players.”
Blake Bridges, ‘24, was the only senior on the golf team and has been the only golfer in his class since his freshman year. Bridges shares about how being the only senior has impacted his time on the team.
“I found my new friends in other grades, and I would give them pointers, and they would give me pointers and we would coach each other and have a good time,” Bridges said.
Golf matches between schools involve the top six golfers from each school, playing against each other. The golfer with the lowest score wins.
Coach James Garcia, who is also the Fresno Christian Student Liaison and cross country coach, enjoys spending time and investing in his athletes.
“You end up spending a lot of time with your athlete whether it’s out running or out on the golf course playing lots of really good conversations and relationship building,” Garcia said.
Eagles also have a new assistant coach on the team, Pete Howell.
Boys and girls golf season come to an end, finishing fourth in their league championship. This season was eventful and action-packed full of anticipation for next season.
