Fresno Christian High School girls compete in a flag football tournament known as Powderpuff, April 9. Coached by members of the football team, the girls practice during the week to prepare for their games.
The competition takes place on the north field, with friends, family and faculty coming out to support the games. Each class got to pick its designated color:
- Seniors: pink
- Juniors: blue
- Sophomores: green
- Freshmen: navy
Boys from each grade, except the sophomores, cheer on their teams with pom-poms, signs and dances. At halftime of each match, they perform routines for the audience. Members of the cheer team help the boys with their stunts and cheering during the competition.
The event starts with the seniors playing against the freshmen. The seniors win, 36-0, and advance to the next game. The juniors then play against the sophomores, with the juniors winning, 28-0.
Junior Olivia Guerrero participates in powderpuff for the first time, hoping to dominate the seniors.
“My favorite part was getting Trinity Bannister’s flag,” Guerrero said. “I went to all the practices, worked hard and pushed myself so I could help my team.”
In the championship game, the seniors face the juniors in a close match. The game goes into double overtime before the seniors secure a, 12-6, victory.
Senior Meghan Connolly competes in the powderpuff tournament for her second time, playing as a wide receiver and running back.
“My favorite part was winning my senior year and seeing my grade come together,” said Connolly. “I joined because I’m pretty athletic and super fast, so it would be a good time, and I like playing sports.”
Congratulations to the seniors for winning, and thank you to all the classes for helping and participating.
