Serve Day 2016 connects community

Campus students visit 8 locations

[/media-credit] Campus students dispersed into groups to serve in different locations. One group visits parks to clean graffiti off the walls.

The procession of the average school day halts and the students board buses to various destinations across the Fresno area. Some will rake leaves, some will serve meals, and some will package food. All will participate in a school wide effort to serve the greater community.

The annual FC Serve Day commences, March. 3. On this day students will reach hands of aid to multiple charities and facilities in the area. These locations include: The Fresno Rescue Mission, FIRM (Fresno International Rescue Mission), Raintree Rest Home, Discovery Center, New Life for Girls’ Outreach Campus, Neighborhood Thrift and Kelpler Charter School. Some students will stay at FC to help with Kid’s Inc and other places of need on campus.

Leadership teacher Robert Foshee says Serve Day provides the opportunity for students to reach out to the community and act as representatives for Christ.

“It give us a chance to go outside the school walls and just minister and talk to different people,” Foshee said. “The Bible says that what you do to the least of these you do to me so that’s why we’re going to nonprofits and church groups and  schools and just across the city. It’s fun to go out into the city and really be the hands and feet of Christ.

Students signed up for the location they wished to serve at chapel, Feb. 23. Sign up forms  also lined the hallways for student absent from chapel or for those who wished to think through their decision in depth.

Vice President, Joshua Carter, ‘16,  encourages students to abandon any trace of apathy and serve with whole hearted and humble minded actions.

“The purpose of FC Serve Day is to allow students a chance and opportunity to connect with the community,” Carter said. “Via this day, students can choose to serve with a passion instead of working as just another day to day task. Hopefully the FC community can learn from this day that there is nothing more honorable than to serve your fellow man. I am excited for this day and look forward to how the student body overcomes the apathetic view of society.”

Senior Caleb Calderon painted park benches last serve day. He says the act transformed the public atmosphere and offered the people a sense of renewal.

“I feel like we gave them a new start,”  Calderon said. “ They used to go to the park and see that the benches had graffiti and everything all over it. Now it’s a completely new bench for them because we made it new.”

Freshman Sophia Kalugin expresses enthusiasm for both the aid of the community and the strengthening of friendships. She says she heard positive reports of the day from the upperclassmen and is eager to participate.

“I’m looking forward to helping the community and making a new high school memory that will benefit other and not just me,” Kalugin said. “I’ve heard it’s really fun even though you’re working the whole time. I’ve’ heard that it’s a good opportunity to bond with your friends too.”

Leadership student Brooke Ainley, ‘17,  encourages students to take part in the event and enjoy the opportunity to serve others.

“I remember one year I did graffiti clean up and it was really fun because I got to paint the whole day,” Ainley said. “It’s really exciting to be able to help the community. You also get to skip a day of school and hang out with friends.”

The video below contains footage of last year’s 2nd annual FC Serve Day. Sites included graffiti clean up, serving food at the Povorello House,  packing food for the Community Food Bank along with many more sites around town.
