Fresno gains new sister city in France

[/media-credit] On February 29, Mayor Gil Averous of Chateauroux attended the official signing ceremony of the two sister cities with Mayor Swearengin at City Hall.

On the first day of the year, Mayor Ashley Swearengin signed Chateauroux, France as Fresno’s new sister city. Chateauroux is located in central France, about 2 hours from the capital city of Paris. As part of tradition, the mayor and deputy mayor of Chateauroux planned to visit Fresno on February 28, 2016. The past sister cities of Fresno have included cities as close as Torreon, Mexico to as far away as Afula, Israel.

On February 29, Mayor Gil Averous of Chateauroux attended the official signing ceremony of the two sister cities with Fresno County Supervisor Henry Perea at City Hall. Central High School French teacher Scott Donaghe and husband of teacher Andrea Donaghe attended the event with several of his French students, along with many notable dignities.

Overall many of the students, including Elizabeth Hernandez, found the exchange between the two mayors to be a historical accomplishment for the cities.

“It’s not everyday that a high school student is honored with the chance to meet the Mayor of Chateauroux in person,” Hernandez said. “The experience was unlike any other; it was truly beautiful to see both cultures blend together. I’m glad that Fresno and Chateauroux are sister cities so our community can benefit from the French as much as they will benefit from us.”

Studying French since his freshman year in high school, Scott Donaghe has appreciated the French language and traditions for many years. As Fresno experienced a new connection with France, Donaghe felt the event not only impacted him greatly, but the central valley as well.

“It was truly an honor to be present at such a historical and culturally important event,” Donaghe said. “The two cities connecting students with students will impact Fresno and the central valley for years to come.”

Mayor Averous also visited an American BBQ Dinner held by the Fresno Sister Cities Committee, March 2. In attendance were city council members, Fresno Sister City Committee members, and Central High French teacher Scott Donaghe.

[/media-credit] Avérous enjoyed the chance to dress up in the traditional American Western clothing attire for cowboys as the event was a cowboy themed party.

This being his first time in California, Avérous witnessed the differing customs of Western life versus life in France. He also visited Fresno State University, wineries, ranches, and the Farmer’s Market.

“I like how casual Californians seem to be,” Avérous said. “They wear clothing very easily, it’s comfortable. I see the cowboy look often here and it’s normal. If someone were to wear that in Chateauroux it would probably be for Halloween.”

Many of Chateauroux’s own customs and history are influenced by Americans. Although Fresno is more than 5 times larger in population than Chateauroux, the two share similar traits and share each others’ qualities, and thus created the sister city alliance between Fresno and Chateauroux.

“Fresno was mainly chosen as Chateauroux’s sister city due to a rich American presence in the French town,” Avérous said. Chateauroux was a very agricultural town and was not modernized until the Americans came. The Americans came to work as part of the US Air Force base and brought along their own products. In Fresno also exists a French organization, L’Alliance Francaise, which certain members live in Chateauroux. Naturally, Fresno seemed the best choice as a sister city.”

While Chateauroux and Fresno tend to have many similarities, they also contrast just as much. However, Avérous finds the differences in Fresno to be encouraging and eye-opening. He also wishes to bring some of the youth to his own town in an exchange program.

“One difference that Fresno has is the growing youth here,” Avérous said. “There are so many young people here with all of the universities and high schools. In Chateauroux the population is aging and far older. We have university in Chateauroux as well as several high schools; we would like to include university students to be a part of the exchange program in Chateauroux as well as high school students.”

[/media-credit] Central High School French teacher Scott Donaghe and English teacher Andrea Donaghe attended the BBQ event for Chateauroux, France, March 2.

Scott Donaghe, who served as translator for the French mayor found the event to be beneficial and an educational experience, meeting important figures to further the sister city program. As a result, he is already planning for the future with Chateauroux.

“Attending the BBQ event was an amazing opportunity to connect in a relaxed way with the people in our community supporting Fresno Sister Cities and with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chateauroux,” Donaghe said. “Speaking with Gil Avérous and Jean-Yves Hugon in such a relaxed atmosphere was mutually beneficial, allowing us to kick around some ideas on how to actually promote this exchange program between our two cities. I am Facebooking daily with Mayor Avérous setting up the connections to begin our first Skype session between high schools in Chateauroux and here in Fresno.”

It is beautiful to witness two sister cities unite into one entity. This, in modern times, is rarely seen in the world as there is so much hate and regret between one another. But finally we can celebrate happiness and brotherhood which should be evident always, between everyone. I am very pleased to see this piece of cultural history between Fresno and Châteauroux in the making! I am hopeful to see a chain of positive events from the experience.

Its a great opportunity , not only for the students in Fresno, but also Châteauroux. It can really inspire students to travel to France later in the future to get closer to the French traditions.

It’s really interesting how Fresno and the Sister cities started to become close and also how sister city made many connections with other states that I did not know. Taking French made me realize to learn more than just 1 language because I can speak a little bit of; Hmong, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and of course French?and learning new/ other languages brings in a lot of details about the culture, traditions and the meaning of everything to it. Learning a foreign language is hard work because i can forget easily of the meaning, spelling/ accents of it. And Monsieur Donaghe told me that when writing or spelling, it’s always and important about the accents because they can always give in a new meaning. I’m glad that Im taking French as my elective even though I signed up for Spanish, I am still happy with what I’m learning and have no regrets. Monsieur Donaghe will always do help us to improve our French by having us speak, write, play French music in class while the students do class work. Because of that I’ve gotten more interested into the French culture/ tradition and its music. Thank you Monsieur Donaghe for your time to teach me/ having my interest into exploring the world of Europe and its capital/ states and countries of it.

I believe that the fact that Fresno, CA is going to be a new sister city to Châteauroux aids in acceptance and diversifying our society in a way that is not only productive but exciting and adventurous. Reading that there are a couple of other sister cities with Fresno and now including Châteauroux makes it even more exciting. The fact that students have the opportunity to visit different places in the world is quite nice and makes for more expansion in knowledge, cultural customs, and social norms from different parts of the world. With this we can definitely debunk prejudice and embrace our differences first hand. Exposure to differences helps dispel fear and ignorance in our communities and greatly aids in easier flow of acceptance in our society.

I find this to especially be a great opportunity for French students as myself to get to know more about France now that we are directly correlated with them now. I have high expectations for what’s to come with our partnership with the city of Châteauroux. It’d be incredible to see the immersion of our two vastly different cultures to be able to come together. It was really cool seeing that just by the way we dress that they found it really interesting themselves that our culture is generally varied in the way we dress. I also find it amazing how they are going to do an student exchange program to get the students who are interested in French and their way of life, to learn more about France. It is also giving a chance for French students to come to America and learn our way of life and get to see all the history here and learn they way of out teachings. Both students from both places will get a chance in their life to learn about a different country not just from a textbook, by going to that country and going to go see the things and learn the things as well. This article is very helpful and a great way too get more information about the two sister cities to connect.

It’s a very rare opportunity for Fresno to have and I think we need to engage in this chance. I am a student at Central and I am excited for this program to start. This is definitely and participating in the program

This is truly an amazing partnership between our two cities! This will allow students from both cities to experience each others cultures firsthand instead of just reading about it.

I think it’s wonderful that Fresno will have more French speaking residents, it’ll be fantastic for those trying to learn French, trying to comprehend how to say words correctly, and it’ll be great to see history in the making and two cultures mixing.

      Jasmeet,
You are right! My grandmother, who moved to central California years ago, was a fluent French speaker since birth, but has since lost some of her native language due to not using it as much here. I think this is such a great experience to keep French culture alive. There seems to be a French bakery on every corner in Fresno, but not enough of us know the language and history enough. Thanks for your comment!

This is such a great accomplishment for Fresno and great opportunity for students at central high school to have the chance to expand their horizons and experience living in a different country, and to see how people live differently in Châteauroux. To experience the culture, language, even different architecture.

      Karolina,
Agreed! Isn’t it so interesting how different, yet how alike our two cities seem to be? We both influence each other greatly, and it’s important to see how we are doing that. It’s always great to have a mixture of cultures in any community.
      Thanks for commenting!
