“The Feather Takes NYC 2016,” this is the second of six videos as apart of a mini series while in New York. The video will be published daily and will account for their various activities during the week.  The Feather Online has been nominated to receive a CSPA Gold Crown award; one of the most prestigious online high school newspaper award. A group of 16 Feather staffers have taken the streets of Manhattan in anticipation for this event. While in New York, they will be touring historical landmarks, tasting different foods and shopping at world-renowned stores. Also, the editors and advisors will be teaching four different sessions at Columbia for the CSPA annual Spring Convention. All footage is filmed and edited by Tim Nyberg, Jarrod Markarian and Jaden Ventura.

The day began with a cold and rainy visitation to view the National September 11 Memorial pools where the twin towers previously stood. Each pool consisted of the names of all those who lost their lives in the attack. Then proceeding was a tour through the museum which contained an educational background of the event, artifacts from that day and an honorary room to everyone who lost their lives.

Feather staffers were “on top the world” at the One World Observatory, which now stands the tallest building in the U.S. and third tallest in the world. It offers a 360 degree panoramic view on Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, and downtown New Jersey. Also known as Freedom Tower, the World Observatory was constructed to reinstate American pride and hope.

Due to rainy weather, itinerary plans were readjusted to accommodate. The staff stopped by Trinity Cathedral, the oldest church in Manhattan, which contains a grave yard where Alexander Hamilton was buried. The church is famous for a cameo appearance in the movie National Treasure staring Nicholas Cage. A walk down Wall Street concluded the afternoon along with a stop by Battery Park for a view of the Statue of Liberty.

In the evening, the New York staff was taken on a behind the scenes tour of Fox News. This included a look at the production sets where the news is broadcasted, the control room and production studio where all the news and information is gathered and edited. Leading the tour was Ashley Taylor, Producer for Fox News, shared with the students the personal journey of her career and a word of encouragement to the student about working hard and not being afraid to step out of ones comfort zone.
