Graduation approaches, students eager to finish

With seniors ready to graduate high school, they have one more trial they they must pass. Senior portfolios are the exit ticket of Andrea Donaghe’s English class.

The senior portfolio is a senior year requirement that is completed in English 12 or an AP English class. The main purpose in creating the portfolio is to begin creating and compiling everything a student will need for an interview to get a job.

The senior portfolio prepares students for what businesses and future employees require in hardcopy and online. The process begins in September then is completed at the beginning of May when the final product is due. After they are turned in, their interviews are scheduled.

Associated Student Body President Hannah Nale, ’17, is going to use this as experience to see what it’s like in a real job interview. She hopes that not only will she get a good grade on it, but she will remember everything she learned from it.

“The senior portfolio is our finishing project this year,” Nale said. “I strive to do very well not only due to the big grade but, the experience of knowing how to conduct ourselves in an interview setting. Learning to be organized, and having a great handshake have been very beneficial. I am not nervous for my interview due to my outgoing personality and love for public speaking.”

ASB Vice President Trevor Trevino, ’17, is ready to show how he’s gonna finish the year of strong, by getting his senior portfolio completed and ready to interview with his peers.

“The senior portfolio contains our accomplishments, our résumé and letter of recommendations to show employers and anybody how well we’re equipped and skilled for a certain career,” Trevino said. “It’s very important to do well on this because it determines whether we graduate or not. I’m not nervous for the interviews because I am a very honest person. I know my skills and assets well and I will do my best to present myself in a way that exemplifies the glory of God in me.”

Olivia Palmer, ’17, is glad that her teacher has prepared her for this interview. She hopes that she will be able to do well on this project.

“The senior portfolio is basically our exit project,” Palmer said. “It is a collection of achievements and just basically a binder full of stuff about you. It’s important to do well on this because it’s our last project and it’s part of our final and worth a lot of points throughout the year. I’m not nervous for the interviews because Donaghe is preparing us super well for it and it should be easy just talking about ourselves.”

The seniors will be presenting their portfolios in front of local business men and women along with other selected adults.
