Art III student Cayla Rivas, ’18, wins the Gene Butler Student Scholarship for her piece, “Silenced”, May 2. Rivas was awarded with Allard’s gift certificates and a check for art supplies.
Rivas was inspired to create “Silenced” by wanting to make artwork that showed emotion.
“I wanted people to connect with my artwork,” Rivas said. “I wanted to make a piece that makes people stop and think instead of just passing over it.”
The medium for this artwork is colored pencil. According to Rivas, using colored pencil is a challenge, every mark you make has to have a purpose. The most difficult part of the piece was the bandage, Rivas struggled to create a realistic and texturized look.
“After I saw how the piece was starting to turn out, I was shocked,” Rivas said. “I didn’t know that I had the ability to accomplish something like that.”
