Derek Kliewer speaks to juniors and seniors

As the year goes on and the fall grows near, upperclassmen start to think about college and the complications associated. There are a large variety of colleges to choose from, which is why college representatives come to show off their schools.

[/media-credit] Fresno Pacific University representative Derek Kliewer, shares his advice to juniors and seniors on applying for scholarships, Sept. 8.

Fresno Pacific University representative Derek Kliewer, shared his advice for getting scholarships.

“It’s best idea to apply early so that you can get the max amount of scholarship,” Kliewer said. “The sooner you apply basically the sooner that scholarships are available to you. There is a deadline for Fresno Pacific so if you want the maximum scholarship, it’s very beneficial for you to apply early. As a Christian school, Fresno Pacific loves attracting Christian students; we love to come to Christian high schools and connect them with different opportunities and with different opportunities that are available.”

Unsure of her major, Fiona Soto, ‘19,  sees FPU as a fallback college to apply for. Soto feels nervous in applying for college.

“I thought his presentation went well. It was clear, smooth and basic,” Soto said. “I am not considering going to FPU because what I am planning to major in is not listed there and it doesn’t meet my standards. There are a bunch of different colleges I want to go to, but I’m not sure on what college is the right one. I have to do more research. I am nervous applying for colleges because nothing is certain.”

Aspiring mechanical engineer Stephen Walters, ‘18, sees the college application as stress-free but struggles with procrastination on applications. Walters sees FPU excelling in the areas of liberal arts and Christian studies.

“I thought his presentation was good,” Walters said. “I am not super interested in Fresno Pacific University because it doesn’t have the engineering program that I want. For liberal art majors and Christian based studies, I think it’s a great option. Right now the colleges I am looking at are Grand Canyon University, Cal Poly and LeTourneau University.”

Carson Cunnings, ‘19, shares his view on the FPU college presentation and his personal college goals.

“I thought it was a very organized clean and simple presentation,” Cunnings said. “I very much enjoyed the slideshow and thought it was very well put together. At the top of my list I would love to go to Stanford, but knowing that this will probably not be achievable I am considering Fresno Pacific, GCU and Boise State. I would like to major in either pre-law English or history. All depending one where God takes me.”
